Hard water, rust, and years of cleaning products leave stains that sink below the surface. Once regular cleaning stops working, the finish wears through, and the stain sits in exposed pores. 2. Chips and Cracks

Chips and cracks look bad and hold moisture, which is where mold and bacteria settle in. Refinishing fills the damage first, then covers everything with a smooth surface that's easy to keep clean. For a single chip, chip and crack repair may be all you need.

Run your hand along the bottom of the tub. If it feels chalky or rough instead of smooth, the gloss has worn off. That texture grips dirt, so the tub looks dirty faster no matter how often you clean it.
